The Exploring Churches Group has now been in existence
for just about four years and continues with Diana Oldfield as convenor
and individuals taking responsibility for arranging the monthly visits.
Provisional members are encouraged to join us and organise visits. The
group has gone from strength to stength with up to 35 members joining
some of the visits. As we are not usually limited for space - except when
we visit some of the smaller churches like St Peter's at Aubourn which
was full on our October 07 visit - everyone is welcome to join us. Just
contact Diane if you are interested.

April |
Hilary and Michael Willerton
arranged a talk at Canwick Church and hosted 20 members at their home
for coffee. |
| |
May |
Diana took us to St Thomas’
Heighington where we had coffee with the Stained Glass Workshop, then
on to a guided tour of St John’s at Washingborough. |
| |
June |
Arranged by Rosemary at
North Rauceby where Gillian Hoare, scion of the land-owning family,
church benefactress, churchwarden, cleaner et al., showed us ‘her’
church and the embroideries by her 19th century maiden aunts. |
| |
July |
Mary Cook and a small group
with Stainfield (possibly the best talk yet) and then on to Bardney. |
| |
August |
Barbara Varlow’s wet,
yet well attended ‘away day’ to Boothby Pagnell Church and the Norman
Hall dating from circa 1200, one of the best remaining Norman Houses
in England. |
| |
September |
Freda Paddison arranged
a fascinating talk at Thurbly with lots of historical interest both
within St Germain's church and the churchyard. The more recent connection
with RAF Swinderby was also explained. We then toured St. Mary the
Virigin Church at Carlton-le-Moorland with its interesting memorials.

October |
This visit, organised by
Doreen Hazeldine, was a tribute to Alfred Lord Tennyson. First at
Somersby then at Bag Enderby, Arthur gave us a potted history of the
poet's life and we were enthralled by poems recited in Lincolnshire
dialect by Brian Dawson. |
| |
November |
This visit also featured
Doreen as we witnessed her record in the baptismal register in Swinderby
Church. Des Underwood gave a personal view of the church where he
has been churchwarden for over 50 years. From here Pat Thomas had
cleverly arranged for us to arrive at All Saints' Church, Eagle for
their weekly coffee morning. Anyone who missed these venues would
be most welcome for coffee at Swinderby on Mondays and Eagle on Tuesdays
from 10 to 12. Diana |
